Five Ways Emotional Intelligence Benefits Business
The powerful computer, tablet, or phone you’re reading this on is nothing but a paperweight without electricity.
Similarly, people are what powers an organization, and without an electrified and functioning team all performance breaks down and there is a blackout.
Based on the EQ-i 2.0 model of emotional intelligence, this article will consider 5 ways in which emotional intelligence shows up in the workplace and how it energizes an organization.
Self-Perception
This is the inner self. A person’s ability to recognize and understand their own emotions, how these emotions are influencing their behavior, and also perceive how others are feeling ( “reading the room” ) and responding productively.
When people have a well-developed sense of self they will have a greater understanding of who they are, what their strengths and limitations are, how they process and reflect on their emotions, and how well they have identified meaningful goals and activities for their life.
Their confidence level is electrifying. Their humility is magnetic.
Do you think you would be powered up and attracted to a leader who displays these kinds of behaviors? We all know good leadership is what sparks a team.
Would you be more inclined to plug into and buy from a salesperson who has these qualities? Of course, you would!

Self-Expression
This is a person’s ability to effectively communicate both verbally and non-verbally.
People who have proper self-expression have well-developed communication skills and understand how to effectively express their emotions. They also know how to be appropriately independent in various situations, respectfully stand their ground when necessary, and adjust their assertiveness level to proper levels in any given situation.
Thoughts are at the root of our emotions. So when we have a thought we have a feeling. Therefore real communication takes place when two or more people effectively communicate their feelings ( thoughts ) productively.
This is exchanging, acknowledging, and understanding the messages contained within the words and non-verbal cues. This means verbal expressions MUST match our non-verbal cues in order for trust to be established.
Can your salesperson sell their product or service if they can’t connect emotionally and gain the trust of their customer?
NO!
Can your customer service representative help a frustrated client if they can’t connect emotionally?
NO!
Without effective communication, your company’s efficiency will short-circuit.

Interpersonal Relationships
This has to do with building long-lasting relationships based on a foundation of trust and compassion.
People who understand how to develop good relationships know how to connect with other people and their emotions. They also know how much to contribute and cooperate to make things better for everyone.
Isn’t it beneficial to have someone on the team who takes the initiative to handle things in the organization? Even in such small matters like taking out the trash without being asked? This is a skill that enables a team to place trust in each other knowing each one will protect the group when no one else is looking.
The moment a team loses its “electrical current” by losing trust and unity the whole system fails.
Decision Making
Emotions always play a part in decision-making. Even the argument to remove emotion from business in itself is an admission that it influences our choices. This aspect of EI refers to using quality methods of decision-making rather than referring to the quality of the outcomes.
People who have this necessary EI skill can assess facts in situations without over- or under- emphasizing them. They get how the facts affect the way they view situations and how they problem-solve. They effectively make choices while being emotionally charged and they can maintain control over their impulses in various situations so they can THINK before acting.
Millions of dollars hang in the balance depending on how skilled someone is in making money-investment-related decisions.
In times of tension or even crisis, a leader NEEDS to be decisive.
Without decision-making skills, it’s as if a live power line was down. It’s unpredictable and it’s dangerous.

Stress Management
When people understand how to cope with stress they remain calm and focused when stressful situations arise – they know the difference between stress and anxiety. They are able to adjust their behavior when circumstances change and they are comfortable with the concept of change itself. Additionally, they remain optimistic even when they confront obstacles.
If there is one constant thing that is guaranteed it is that things will change. Business is dynamic, meaning it ebbs and flows like the waves of the ocean. Without a willingness to “go with the flow” and accept or even explore new things, a company will get bypassed by its competition.
Overstimulation of anxiety puts someone in a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze. Can your representative take care of a client if they’re in fight mode? Can your leader lead if they want to retreat? Can you sell if you do nothing and watch a prospective client walk away?
If all of that happens at once it’s lights out.
The Bottom Line
In the very building you are in right now the electrical infrastructure is required to follow a strict building code and needs constant maintenance.
Don’t hold back on doing the same for yourself and your people. Emotions require structure and regular maintenance.
If you do this your company will shine brighter than Las Vegas.
