Are You Taking Care of Yourself?
Quality of life. It’s more important than you think. Are you taking care of yourself physically and mentally?
As the number of gig-economy workers and solopreneurs continues to rise, I feel this is an important subject to reflect on. Many people prioritize and put others like family and clients before themselves. However, time for yourself is needed as well.
Are you taking proper time for yourself?
Don’t wait for a health wake up call to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Like many things in life that require work, your health is worth the time and effort. Diet, exercise, and mental health (emotional, psychological, and social well-being) are important enough to schedule into your day, daily.

Healthy Diet
Did you happen to put on some extra pounds after vacation? Are you still eating like a teenager? Prepare snacks and meals in advance so that when you’re hungry, you can easily eat something healthy. Apple slices and baby carrots are easy go to snacks. Healthy recipes like broccoli quiche or vegetable lasagna can be prepared and/or frozen to be ready when needed. There are plenty of recipes like these, including those in healthy Mediterranean diets, readily available via the internet and cookbooks.
Drink water. According to the Mayo Clinic, nearly all of your body’s major systems depend on water to function and survive. It helps the body’s filtration system by lessening the burden on kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products. Among its many benefits, water regulates body temperature and lubricates joints.
Exercise
Walking is probably the easiest form of exercise to perform since we are doing it consistently throughout our day. According to Dr. Tamanna Singh, MD of the Cleveland Clinic, walking for 30 minutes a day has many health benefits including decreasing your resting heart rate, lowering your blood pressure and LDL (your “bad” cholesterol) and strengthening your heart. It reduces stress and gives you a boost by releasing your body’s endorphins.

Mental Health
Make yourself and someone else happy. When shopping, go to a cashier instead of self-checkout and say hello to a live person. This may perk you both up! Serving the public is not easy…You may just make that cashier’s day with your smile and small talk.
Donate something you no longer want or need. Someone less fortunate might be able to make good use it. I read an article about a swing set which sat unused because the family’s children outgrew it. These are expensive to buy new, so they thought, “why not help a family with young children and give it to them?” Donating is good for the soul!
Volunteering is fun and impactful. It provides the opportunity to do good and maybe meet a new friend and/or a business contact. You can look at it as another way to network! If you become a Redcoat volunteer at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, you can serve the public in an exciting environment and could catch a Broadway show!
Do you have a hobby or side hustle you enjoy doing? This interest may carry you through to retirement and beyond. I read about a retired gentleman who sells his artwork and is able to earn some nice spending money!

Listen to music. Music can help put you in a better mood and instill calmness. Choose your music based on your desired outcome; Dance music can help you become energized, conversely slower classical music can encourage relaxation.
Take visual breaks from your computer using the 20-20-20 rule. This rule involves taking a 20-second break from looking at a screen every 20 minutes. During this break, focus on an object that is at least 20 feet away which relaxes the eye muscles. According to Rachel Nall, MSN, CRNA, in her article Nall, T. (2023, February 23) Does the 20-20-20 Rule Prevent Eye Strain? (20-20-20 rule: How to prevent eye strain (medicalnewstoday.com) this rule indeed serves to prevent eye strain.
People, whether working or retired, need a purpose. Why get up in the morning? COVID wasn’t so long ago; people were depressed as well as fearful for their loved one’s health as well as their own. This was a time that many are glad is now in the past. What daily activities are you looking forward to? Are you excited to go to work? Does your job fulfill you? If not, maybe it’s time for a change? This may take some time but your happiness is worth it. A job should be more than a paycheck.
Live life to the fullest by taking the time and effort to take care of yourself!
I am considering printing this article out and taping it to the bathroom mirror as a constant reminder for continuous self-improvement of quality of life!
